VoIP stand for Voice-over-Internet protocol. At a very basic level it is the idea of using a data network to transfer voice between two points. Although voip has become a buzz word in recent years has it origins as far back as the early 1970s. The pioneering work of Danny Cohen at the University of Southern California first tested the Network Voice Protocol (NVP) in December 1973.

It may be true that VoIP can provide services and facilitate tasks that is harder and can be more expensive but its functions are all worth it, like its capacity to transmit more than one phone call on the same connection. This way, you can add extra line for your home or businesses. It has conference calling features, caller ID, automatic redial and other related services. VoIP can indeed be very convenient especially that only an internet connection is needed to place a call, this is also relevant for business users like call center agents who can work anywhere. With its integration with other internet services, you can use video camera, data file transfer or other information passing features.

Sending faxes using VoIP system is still limited because its voice codecs does not match and is not designed for fax transmission. The fax sound basically cannot fit in the Voice over Internet Protocol channel. People in VoIP are trying to make a solution by defining a substitute IP-based resolution for sending fax-over-IP called T.38 protocol. Another potential remedy to conquer this limitation is to turn the fax system into a message switching system that does not require a real-time info transmission like sending a fax as a remote printout or email attachment. The end system can thoroughly buffer the incoming data via fax before printing or displaying the fax image.

For 911: better to use landlines than VoIP

Category: General — editor @ 3:18 pm

A computer science professor in the University of Calgary, Tom Keenan said that in 911 emergency calls, it is still better and more reliable to use landline tekephones than Voice over Internet Protocols. He said to CBC News that for elderly parents and small children, landline is more convenient because VoIP has certain limitations that can be a drawback for 911 emergencies. First of all, according to Prof. Keenan, landlines connects you to the 911 operator directly and can be tracked automatically because of the address and phone number attachment. Whereas in using VoIP, 911 operators cannot track you automatically because there is no physical address that links you to their signal. With this, call center operators should reroute the 911 calls to the operator manually.

It is quite costly to call abroad especially for those who need lengthy calls. But nowadays, with the use of VoIP you can easily call anybody overseas through Yahoo Voice Chat, GoogleTalk, Skype, etc., free of charge or with minimum amount. Primarily, there are two types of VoIP services. One is the “computer to computer” which is free and unlimited as long as the one you are calling has the same installed VoIP software. The other type is “computer to mobile phone or landline” which is free to a very few providers but usually, there is a minimum amount charged for the caller.
